D7 Newman, Fiorentino caper stylishly in 'Money' 't a THE BOSTON GLOBE FRIDAY, APRIL 14, 2000 M'rM'ytf; REVELS PRESENTS 1 V-' By Jay Carr GLOBE STAFF WHERE THE MONEY IS Directed by: Marek Kanievska Screenplay by: E. Max Frye, Topper LUien, Carroll Carturrighi Starring: Paul Newman, Linda Fiorentino, Dermot Mulroney At: Copley Place, suburbs Running time: 89 minutes Rated: PG-1S (some sexual content) into a couple of tight corners. "Where the Money Is" is as much about character as about the caper. But the test of any caper movie is whether you like the crooks enough to root for them. This one aces the test effortlessly as Newman and Fiorentino project more than enough charm to melt any mere armored car.

Liking her spirit, and realizing he can't dothejobalone.he cuts her and Wayne in for a piece of the action. The action, in this case, involves hijacking an armored car, going around town picking up the night's take from various establishments, then making off with it Of course, it doesn't quite go as planned.

Henry's cool and his improvisatory abilities are tested several times, and it's a pleasure to watch Newman unfurl them with the relaxed authority he brings to the character acting that has occupied the latter part of his life after he spent decades feeling ambivalent about being cast in romantic leads. Fiorentino, that delectable panther of an actress, has film's sultriest purr since the golden age of Lauren Bacall. She convinces us that in Henry, Carol's restlessness has found just what it needs to move to the next level It's fun watching her awaken to new possibilities she had only half acknowledged before Henry's arrival. Mulroney holds up his end of the collaboration too as the husband who likes the idea of the heist, but is jealous of his wife's fascination with the experienced older man. The film is tense when it has to be, but mostly it's jaunty, kept aloft by a playful mix of energies, except when the thieves are backed In "Where the Money Is," Paul Newman is cool, Linda Fiorentino is hot, and that's all the film needs Movie to put the joy back into larceny.

Con-ReVieW noisseurs of bank robbery will immediately recognize the source of the film's title. When real-life mid-century career criminal Willie Sutton was asked why he robbed banks, he replied, with impeccable logic, "Because that's where the money is." In the film, Newman's cagey old-timer, Henry Manning, shares this view. When he's wheeled out of prison into a nursing home, doubled up into a wheelchair by a supposed stroke, Fiorentino's nurse is convinced he's faking his way out of stir. She's right. She knows Henry is a veteran bank robber.

What she doesn't know is that Henry is planning one last big score. But her heart is in the right place, namely a larcenous one. Soon, she and Newman's old-timer bond and her blue-collar husband, DermotMulroney's Wayne, is in on the caper too. Think of "Where the Money Is" as a modest, blue-collar version of "The Sting," with Newman an aging Butch Cassidy, or Hud, a guy who wears a lot of experience in his face, is in no hurry to make his move, but FINAL 4 SHOWS! The film never drags, but one of the enjoyable things about it is its way of taking its time letting us get to know and savor the characters.
