THE BOSTON DAILY GLOBE WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2. 1958 WELL, TOM, WILL IT BE FENWAY 9 Sporlf Likely 2 A.JV- Tom Enjoys Owning Own Ball Park By HY HURWITZ- Will Tom Yawkey be a tenant? That seems to be the rub in the proposed 60,000 seat sports stadium for Norwood, with its accompanying motel, restaurant, etc. As a personal guess, Mr. Yawkey will have nothing to do with a stadium such as the one proposed and announced yesterday with blueprints, foul lines and pretty landscaping. A man of great pride, the Red Sox owner is happy with Fenway Park.

He has spent thousands of dollars to make his property the best in baseball. for not permitting the Braves to move into Fenway Park and Tom takes great delight ini working out on his property in private, especially when the ball sharing it with the Red Sox. club is out of town. He'd be un Tom explained that he did Act wish to have any tenants in tha ball park. To point out his feeling on such matters, he cited a request of a sister to build a house on Tom's Island plantation off Georgetown, S.

C. He turned down the request because he did not believe in sharing his property with anyone. announced that because of the effect on his baseball diamond, he would not permit any further college football play on Fenway Park. He is a proud person. He wants the best park in baseball.

Being a tenant in Norwood, he would not be in a position to have the park kept up to his exacting, perfect specifications. He would be unable as a payer of rent to make any such demands. The Norwood Stadium, of course, would be used for all sports. It couldn't possibly be kept up as well as Fenway Park, now used exclusively for baseball. A couple of years ago Mr.

Yawkey was criticized unjustly There have been several efforts made to sell land to the Red Sox by real estate operators in various sections of Boston during the past couple of seasons. As a result, there have been reports of an interest by the Red Sox to moving out of Fenway Park. "We are not seeking to move out of Fenway Park," General Manager Joe Cronin has said on a number of occasions. "Sure, I've been approached on the subject and have gone out to a couple of prospective sites. But it was not done because we want to move but because of good will to the people who wanted us to see some sites." Only a year ago, Mr.

Yawkey able to enjoy the privacy and pleasure it he were just a tenant. It is Tom's great personal love of baseball that has kept him in the game and as owner of the Red Sox in spite of the club's failure to win but one pennant over a period of 25 years. Having known Tom since he first moved to Boston, it is this writer's feeling Yawkey would not consent to move his ball park to the suburbs as part of a vast commercial It is doubtful if Yawkey has had a change of mind in this respect. Billy Sullivan, the public re- lations man, who dreamed up the Norwood Stadium, stated that he had not discussed the plan with Mr. Yawkey.

"I ve talked with Joe Cronin, Sullivan declared, "and Joe told me that when we were ready to make a proposition it would OR NORWOOD? be okay to submit the proposal When Joe gets back from Sara-sota, I'll call on him with our proposition." G.M. JOE CRONIN (LEFT) AND TOM YAWKEY We re betting the answer will be: "No." Nowaskey Named Maiden's New Cinder Track Nearly Finished By ERNEST DALTON B.C.
