10 The Boston Globe Saturday. October 2, 1976 If you want a Christmas I 1 NOW PLAYING! 1 Minhtc nWI VI Oct. 1,2,3 party here. 'Special Delivery' misses the mail Sin9'n9 of "Italw American hurry. REVIEW MOVIE SPECIAL DELIVERY -Directed by Paul Wendkos at the Cinema 57 and theaters in Braintree, Burlington, Danvers and Framing-ham.

The Sheraton-Boston has great party rooms. But even the biggest party center in Boston gets booked solid in -v December. (That's the penalty for being so good.) Don't delay.

There are love scenes, of course: "America's hottest new stars pitted against each other in more ways than one!" is the promise of the poster in the lobby. Cybill has just been divorced. She tells her ex: "I left you for somebody else me." She lives in an artist's pad which is located down the block from the massage parlor. Bo looks around and asks: "How long have you been into painting?" She isn't really listening. "How do you like the view?" she inquires provocatively, slipping out of something uncomfortable.

Both Svenson and Shepherd have blindingly yellow hair and both of them twinkle a lot. When they get together it's Narcissus and Narcissa. Maybe they're the same person. The mailbox, you'll be glad to hear, plays its role with a certain steely wants it. The corner was busy, so Cybill Shepherd, who saw everything too, also wants the mailbox.

The man behind the dope pusher finds out what's going on and he wants it: He's an Oriental who sends out to the deli for his supper and quotes "Hamlet." There are some foul-talking punks hanging around (rating PG), but they don't want the mailbox because they don't know what's in it: Bo Svenson cleans them out anyway. A yappy little dog is always running around, but you're not sure whether he wants the mailbox. There's one nifty bit of sex-and-violence a fist-fight backstage in a porno theater but director Paul Wendkos doesn't really do much with this opportunity. Perhaps he felt defeated by Don Gazzaniga's script which is so clumsy that the main villains and the main hero never come into contact. They don't even know who each other are.

You'll keep awake only by trying to figure out how such a thoroughly stupid film ever got made. It begins with a bank robberyfour Vietnam veterans, disgusted by the way society has treated them since they got back, decide to take what they think is coming to them. Bo Svenson is the mastermind, but he isn't smart enough: His three friends get caught or killed, and he ends up stuffing a lot of the cash into a mailbox in the sleaziest part of Los Angeles special delivery. Get it? The Courthouse Beat Reports on how the judges and juries mete out justice are reported daily in The Boston Globe by staff, writers Joseph Harvey, Alan Sheehan and William Doherty.

Bo Svenson uses persuasion on a mailbox containing bank loot in "Special Delivery." Everybody wants the Bo Svenson wants it. A creepy dope-pushing bartender who saw Bo stuff the cash down the slot SATURDAY OCT. 2, 11 A.M. to 11 P.M. SUNDAY OCT.

Redd Foxx runs off with 'Norman' TOWN and COUNTRY THln his indifferent son, Foxx ends up in the waterbed with the doxie. The movie was originally a Broadway flop (10 performances) in 1969, played by a white cast. In its West Coast trip it changed colors as well as locale from Manhattan to L.A. And, because of Foxx, it turns into a riotous at times movie, if the viewer can accept the subject matter. The father at first is concerned that his wife has run off to Mexico with his good-for-nothing brother, but when he finds out the truth about Norman well, you can imagine. Foxx is just about perfect as the middle-aged, middle-America father, now puzzled, now enraged, as he struggles for comprehension.

But there's hardly a moment of seriousness in the picture as Foxx barrels his way through, doing what amounts to a hilarious nightclub turn. NORMAN IS THAT YOU? Directed by George Schlatter. At the Savoy and theaters in Natick, Dedham, Woburn and Danvers. Rated PG. By George McKinnon Globe Staff There was no middle-ground for matinee movie- goers at the Savoy yesterday afternoon. Some sat in stoney disapproving silence, while others dissolved into wild laughter that blotted out dialogue.

The reason for the film dichotomy was the subject matter, homosexuality, which has long been out of the closet and onto stage and screen but can still cause uneasiness with a mass audience. But the laughers probably have the right idea, because the movie is made strictly as REVIEW MOVIE the big screen and never lets go, practically wiping out all the subsidiary performers. And that includes the redoubtable Pearl Bailey who, although co-starred, has only what amounts to a late walk-on, which she fluffs, badly. Miscast is perhaps the kindest word for Pearlie Mae's performance. The movie doesn't proselytize nor does it put down, but simply accepts the fact of homosexuality and then plays it for a high-spirited romp.

Foxx plays a middle-class father from Tucson who arrives to visit his son in Los Angeles, unaware that the young man, Norman (Michael Warren) is gay and has a white roommate love (Dennis Dugan).
