The flag burning was sponsored by the 12-vear-old organization called Wake Up America. The group burned an Iranian flag in 1979 in support of the American hostages. Wake Up America members from Dedham and representatives from several Polish-American organizations gathered before the statue of Christopher Columbus for the flag-burning, which was led by Arthur Stivaletta. founder of Wake Up America. "We stand here before Christopher Columbus, in a country founded by people looking for political and religious freedom to show support for nations searching for freedom." said Stivaletta.

The protesters, holding signs denouncing communism and supporting the Polish Solidarity movement, looked on as the red flag with the gold star and sickle burned slowly in the rain. "That's how it is in nature: it's difficult to fight communism." said Alexandra Hawiger of Newton, a member of the Third of May Club. Also in attendance were members of Solidarity of New England, the Polish Relief Fund Committee and the Polish Cultural Institution. Since the Dec. 13 military takeover in Poland, the Polish American Congress, in conjunction with other Polish-American groups, has held two rallies in Boston and is planning a third for New Year's Day in City Hall Plaza.

GLOBE PHOTO BY JANET KNOTT The Polish American Congress has also sent a petition with 12.000 signatures to the United Nations requesting that the Security Council send an impartial investigative commission to Poland, according to Boguslaw Lipinsky. a member of Solidarity of New England. In addition to the rallies and candle light vigils held nightly in Faneuil Hall, area Polish-Americans recently formed the Polish Relief Fund Committee, which has collected $5000 to buy food and clothing to be sent to Poland, according to a member of the committee, Maria Lesnieswki.
