Even as recently as a few decades ago, local graduates were overwhelmingly white. Many of those pictured here graduated in an era before the civil rights movement, the women's movement, and the Vietnam War shook the status quo. Since then, immigration reforms have also enabled large numbers of people from non-European nations to enter the country, profoundly altering the city's makeup. Twenty years from now, the list of prominent graduates will probably feature more names like Yuri, Mei, and Latifa than Thomas, William, or John.
