Patriots pondering changing club logo By Peter May GLOBE STAFF LOS ANGELES New coach. New management team. New logo and uniforms, too? The Patriots are into change, and that extends to their paraphernalia as well as their personnel.

The team has started talks with NFL Properties about changing its logo, the one with the Patriot center over the ball. The team hopes to hear back in two weeks with some proposals. Public relations director Mike Hanson said yesterday that the team is simply interested in seeing some other designs, but that nothing is official. The change, if it does come, could be in effect for the upcoming season. Generally, a team needs to have a new logo or uniform change approved by October for the following season.

But the league can grant an exemption and the Patriots think they might get one. The Patriots now are 25th out of 28 teams in merchandising sales, so any change would probably be a welcome one by the NFL marketing types. The Patriots considered a logo change two years ago when Sam Jankovich came on board, but did not do anything. The original Patriots logo is the work of artist Phil Bis-sell, who drew it as his Globe cartoon the day after the team's nickname was announced in 1959. Bissell last year recalled how that cartoon came to be the team's logo.

"Billy Sullivan had 75 prospective logos spread out on the basement floor of his home," Bissell said. "When his son, Patrick, came down to say good night, Billy asked Patrick which he liked. Instead, Patrick ran to his room and got my drawing. Billy declared right then and there that would be the team logo." Over the years, "Pat," as Bissell calls him, has been at home in Boston (Braves Field and Fenway Park), Cambridge (Harvard Stadium), Chestnut Hill (Boston College) and Foxborough. He's been changed and slicked up a bit over the years and, on Aug.

24, 1979, rebuffed a bid by NFL Properties for a major change. That day, 60,916 fans stormed Schaefer Stadium with Old Pat in one end zone and New Pat in the other and waited for WHDH's Jess Cain to register their votes on an "applause-o-meter." New Pat registered a 2 on the meter; the resounding cheer for Old Pat pushed the needle right off the diaL Patrick Sullivan recalled that day when the Patriots made it to Super Bowl XX. That was the only official time NFL Properties tried to get us to change the logo, but I can't count how many times they've unofficially asked us about it" With all the other changes to the team this year, it looks like Old Pat's days may be numbered, too.
